Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) is a type of insurance that covers you in the event that you die or suffer the loss of a limb or loss of sight in an accident. It is similar in some ways to life insurance. For example, if you were to die from falling down a flight of stairs, both an AD&D policy and a life insurance policy would cover you. However, as we tell clients at our Yuba City Insurance agency, if you were to die from a heart attack (i.e. a cause that is not defined as an accident), an AD&D policy would not cover that. But, on the flip side, an AD&D policy would provide a benefit if you were to lose a limb, but a life insurance policy would not.

It can be a little confusing. And just to make it more so, some life insurance policies offer riders that add AD&D coverage.

AD&D Policy Exclusions

Like most insurance policies, AD&D coverage has exclusions — meaning events not covered by the policy. They typically include death or injury...

  • While involved in an illegal act
  • While under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Due to acts of war
  • During surgery
  • Caused by a physical or mental illness
  • Caused by an infection
  • Caused by an overdose (with the possible exception of cases where a doctor prescribes or administers too high a dose)
  • Caused by inherently “risky” activities like flying a plane, skydiving, car racingResulting from suicide or self-harm

AD&D Application and Payout

Since an AD&D policy covers fewer types of incidents than a life insurance policy, the application process tends to be much faster and less strict. For example, because deaths related to health conditions are not covered by an AD&D policy, a medical exam or medical records review is not required. Generally speaking, it only takes a few minutes to complete an AD&D application.

As for payout on an AD&D policy, only accidental deaths are covered, so there is generally a certain amount of investigation by the carrier to ensure the death or dismemberment was accidental. If they believe it was not, the payout can be contested.
